Transfer Switches

Right Arrow

Every Briggs & Stratton standby generator system comes with an automatic transfer switch. An automatic transfer switch senses when utility power flowing to your home is interrupted and automatically manages your home’s transition to backup power.

Your local Briggs & Stratton dealer can help you find the right standby generator models and transfer switch combination that best fits your home.

Choose The Right Transfer Switch For Your Home

All generator systems require an Automatic Transfer Switch. They are available in 5 sizes: 50 Amps, 100 Amp, 150 Amp, 200 Amp, and Dual 200/400 Amp. Your home's electrical service will determine the size you need. For example, 100 Amp service is very common in older homes while 200 Amp service is common in newer homes. Large luxury homes and small businesses tend to have 400 Amp Service, commonly using two 200 Amp split distribution. Briggs & Stratton® is proud to be the only manufacturer to offer a dual 200 Amp/split 400 Amp switch.

Even if you don’t know what electrical service your home has, there are two common places where the information can be located:

1. Inspect your electrical panel for a label that indicates its amperage rating. The electrical panel will be located where the rest of your home’s utilities are located such as the furnace and water heater, or it could be a separate panel installed on a wall where your utility power enters your home.

2. Look at the amperage rating on your main breaker, located in your electrical panel. The main breaker is the largest breaker you have and should have its capacity written on it or adjacent to it. With Briggs & Stratton’s complete line of automatic transfer switches, you can take charge before the power goes out. A transfer switch is the brains behind the system, creating a direct line of communication between utility power and the generator. All generator systems require the purchase and installation of a transfer switch.
